In many cases, the user interface to a program is the most important part for a commercial company: whether the programs works correctly or not seems to be secondary.
Why worry about user interface
UI design and UX design (along with UI/UX design) are a few in-vogue terms in the recent times, largely due to increasing competition in the digital world. Startups and Brands & Retailers have been desperately looking for ways to edge out their competition by differentiating themselves. They have realized that in ever connected world a prospective user is highly impatient and if they are not able to engage them on their web property chances of their survival are nil. This is where Startups, Brands and retailers are getting hooked to find and adopt the best UI/UX design practices.
Several industry folks use these terms (UI design & UX design) interchangeably in general conversation (That is why it is incorrectly referred to as UI/UX design), however they connote to two completely different, yet compatible, concepts. Some say that they are the two sides of the same coin.
User Interface design (UI design):
UI or user interface is used in general parlance in place of GUI – graphical user interface in the field of information technology. It is the space where interactions between humans and computers occur. The goal of this interaction is to allow effective operation and control of the computers from the human end, whilst the computer simultaneously feeds back information that aids the users’ decision making process.
Generally, the goal of user interface design is to produce a user interface which makes it easy (self explanatory), efficient, and enjoyable (user friendly) to operate a computer in the way which produces the desired result. This generally means that the user needs to provide minimal input to achieve the desired output, and also that the machine minimizes undesired outputs to the human.
User Experience Design (UX design or UXD or UED)
User Experience Design (UX design or UXD or UED) is the process of enhancing user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the user and the interface. User experience (UX) design (UED or UXD) encompasses traditional human–computer interaction (HCI) design, and extends it by addressing all aspects of a product or service as perceived by users.

Importance of UI/UX Design in winning a consumer
UI Design is nothing but User Interface design and is the part of the web interface (portal or mobile) that faces the user when he looks at the site, and the UX Design is nothing but User Experience and it relates to how the user feel when they look at the website aka the broad scope.
Both UI & UX are crucial to a interface and work closely together. UX Design practice is a more analytical and technical in nature, however UI Design subjective and creative in nature and is closer to graphic design.
The visual appeal of a UI on portal or mobile has a significant impact on users as its information Architecture doesn’t enable engagement on its own.
